Three Easy Steps for Traveling with Jewelry

Three Easy Steps for Traveling with Jewelry

Summer is fading fast, and it’s time to get one last trip in before fall pulls up.

There’s no doubt that you’ll want to remember your fun getaway with memorable selfies, pics, and videos that show off your personal style on holiday. I can't think of a better way to do that than bringing your favorite clothing, accessories and jewelry along for the ride!

But what to choose, how to pack and how make sure your jewelry stays safe while you travel?

There’s so many things to consider when packing your jewelry for a summer vacation or holiday of any kind, and it’s time to share my favorite tips!

I’ve been an avid traveler for decades. From months long international trips to spontaneous overnights, and everything in between, I've seen it all and have learned a lot about traveling with jewelry.

Whether you’re going to be hopping on a plane for a splashy beach holiday with your favorite person, or jumping in the drivers seat for a nostalgic summer road trip with your best girlfriends, I’m sharing my jewelry travel checklist to make your summer travel with jewelry a breeze!

Step 1 | What Jewelry Should I Bring on Holiday?

Your destination and planned activities will help you figure out the most important question to consider when packing jewelry for travel:

What are you wearing?

Depending on the how long your trip is and how much space you have, you’ll want your clothing selections to make sense for your destination. For example, if you’re going on a beach vacation, summer dresses, bikinis, coverups and sandals make a lot of sense. Heavy jeans and sweaters?

Probably not.

Choose jewelry that fits in with your personal style, the clothes and other accessories you’re bringing, and the activities you’ll be enjoying.

Personally, I tend not to like the stickiness of summer and shy away from wearing necklaces, and instead opt for a mix of bracelets, earrings and rings to accent my summer looks. So, I focus on selecting those items. If I’m going for a week or two, I’ll grab one or two of each so I can switch things out.

The last thing?

Don’t bring your most expensive jewelry when you travel.

A wedding ring that you’ll be wearing ‘round the clock is likely fine, but leave those pricey special occasion pieces safe and sound at home.

Step 2  | How Much Jewelry Should I Bring on Vacation?

The most important things to take into account here are the length of your trip, the space you have in your luggage, and general security.

I cannot stress this enough.

Unless you have a lot of space, will be traveling over several months, feel pretty safe while you’re out and about, and have a safe and secure space to keep your pieces when not in use, I don’t recommend travelling with a large selection of jewelry.

Why?

Losing your favorite jewelry is one of the worst feelings, whether it happens in your daily life or on holiday. Especially if the the pieces you lose are sentimental. Instead, lower the chances of a big loss and take only take a small selection of jewelry that will easy to mix and match with the looks you’ve packed. If you like variety, give yourself an extra option or two.

Love mixing and stacking bracelets? Bring some extras along. Do you feel naked without your fave stacking rings? If they're a part of your daily style, and you're going somewhere it makes sense, make the space.

The last thing to keep in mind is to keep the jewelry you’re not wearing safe and sound! Use the room safe for extra security.

Step 3 | How to Pack Your Jewelry for Travel

How you pack your jewelry depends on how many pieces you’ve chosen to travel with.

On long and short trips alike, I tend to wear some basics, usually a pair of studs or hoops and a bracelet or two when I’m in transit, then pack the rest in a small jewelry roll, travel case, or bag.

My favorite tip for packing and traveling with jewelry?

Make sure to leave a little room.

You'll want to have some extra space in case you find a special piece of jewelry you love somewhere along your journey. Local artisans around the world make the most incredible things, and sometimes the jewelry will just call out to you! It's a lovely way to support the local community you're visiting and bring your memories home.

If you're flying, remember to pack your jewelry in your carry-on and always keep close tabs at all times.

I’ve found that a jewelry roll or travel case is better for longer trips where I want more options, and the small bag is perfect for shorter vacations where I have up to ten pieces. My jewelry comes in small individual pouches, which I’ve found to be amazing for storage and travel in general. The smaller pouches stay secure in the bag, and keep the necklaces from moving around and getting tangled with each other.

I love that the pouches my jewelry comes in makes for perfect storage and travel options, but sometimes I like to travel with a bit more jewelry in tow.  If you’re like me, I’ve got something new for you!
