What is Demi-Fine Jewelry?
Share
You’ve likely heard of fine jewelry before, and I’d be willing to bet that you’ve heard of costume jewelry – but what about demi-fine jewelry?
It’s a term that’s popped up in the last few years and has gained popularity only recently, so now seemed like the perfect time to demystify the subject.
To understand what demi-fine jewelry is, it’s helpful to understand the difference between fine jewelry and costume jewelry. Let’s take a look!
What is Fine Jewelry?
Fine jewelry is comprised of precious gems set in solid precious metals. Think solid gold, paired with diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires.
A good example of fine jewelry would be an engagement ring or wedding set. Showcasing high quality and craftsmanship, fine jewelry can last many lifetimes, and is often heirloom jewelry that is passed from one generation to the next.
I tend to categorize fine jewelry in two different ways. The first is daily wear, which features the classics like a well loved pair of diamond studs or your wedding ring. The second type is more elaborate, and is likely hidden away in a jewelry box and worn only on special occasions.
As styles have changed over the decades, many existing fine jewelry pieces may feel a little outdated, which leaves them unused or under utilized. These are often sentimental pieces that are passed down, or given as gifts. Unfortunately, as the style doesn’t match the owner, these pieces will sit in a jewelry box instead of being worn. For example, my collection of fine jewelry is limited to my wedding ring, engagement set, and a few heirloom pieces passed down from family. I keep them for sentimental value, but the most often worn pieces? Just one – my wedding ring.
Aside from unworn and outdated designs, another big drawback of new fine jewelry is the high price tag.
As a result, many women choose to own fewer pieces of fine jewelry in more classic styles.
What is Costume Jewelry?
On the other hand, costume jewelry is made of imitation materials, like rhinestones and base metals.
Also known as fashion jewelry, costume jewelry is lower in quality, and a fraction of the cost of fine jewelry. Largely trend driven and mass produced, you can find hundreds of examples at any fast fashion or big box store
As is the case with fast fashion, costume jewelry isn’t made to last. This is evident in the materials used and design quality – “gems” can come lose or fall out, and metals will tarnish and lose shine over time, or even cause skin discoloration and rashes from metal alloys like nickel. Those with jewelry allergies often have to steer clear of costume jewelry.
So what’s the benefit? These items are infinitely more affordable, and it’s easier to find and purchase jewelry that fits your personal style.
So What is Demi-Fine Jewelry?
While it’s good to have a few fine jewelry classics in the mix, it can feel a bit limiting, style-wise. While costume jewelry can pick up some of the slack, it lacks in longevity.
So where do modern women turn?
Demi-fine jewelry exists for this very reason. Simply put, demi-fine jewelry hits that sweet spot because it’s designed to bridge the gap between fine and costume jewelry. It’s that essential combination of quality and craftsmanship with affordability and style.
Featuring higher quality materials such as semi-precious gemstones and pearls, along with innovative, high-quality gold alternatives including vermeil (gold plate over sterling silver), multi-layered gold plating, and gold-fill, demi-fine jewelry is affordable, stylish, and made to last. A well taken care of piece of demi-fine jewelry can last for decades or longer.
While there’s overlap with both fine and costume jewelry, you’ll see that demi-fine jewelry shares more with the fine jewelry category. Although fine jewelry isn’t practical for many, demi-fine jewelry is a far more accessible and attractive alternative.
It’s also what I’ve been making since 2004, and exactly what you’ll find on this site.
