A Guide to Reiki: In-Person vs. Distance

A Guide to Reiki: In-Person vs. Distance

When people hear the word Reiki, they often imagine something mysterious, esoteric, or detached from ordinary life.

At its core, Reiki is a gentle, structured discipline of holding space for deep physical rest, energetic recalibration, and nervous system regulation. In my practice, I've learned that Reiki is about creating the quiet conditions your own system needs to settle, unwind, and return to center.

If you are curious about energy work but wondering how it functions, what what happens in-person vs. distance session, here's a clear breakdown of the practice and how to choose the format that fits you best.

What Is Usui Reiki?

The method I practice is called Usui Reiki Ryoho, the original lineage developed in Japan in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui.

Reiki translates roughly to "universal life force energy." In an Usui session, the practitioner acts as a clear, steady conduit rather than an intrusive force. I do not push energy into your system, diagnose conditions, or manipulate your field. Instead, I hold a calm, neutral space using specific hand placement hovering just above the body.

When your body senses a completely safe, quiet perimeter, your nervous system can downshift out of sympathetic "fight-or-flight" and into the parasympathetic state of true restorative rest. From that grounded baseline, your system naturally sorts out what it needs to integrate or release.

In-Person Studio Sessions (Berlin)

In-person sessions take place at my private studio space in Berlin, designed as an intentional shelter from the city's sensory hum.

The Experience:

  • We start with a brief grounding check-in to discuss what you want to let go and what you want to bring in.
  • You remain fully clothed on a comfortable treatment surface.
  • Hands are hovered at specific placements throughout the session to anchor physical awareness.
  • We close with a few moments of quiet reorientation, water, and grounded conversation about what came up.

Choose In-Person If:

  • You crave a physical break from your everyday environment: Stepping out of your home into a dedicated, quiet sanctuary helps you signal to your brain that it is time to unplug.
  • You respond to deeply grounded presence: If your nervous system feels safest and most anchored through the subtle, grounding presence of an experienced practitioner in a comfortable space.
  • You are local to Berlin: You want to pair the appointment with a slow, contemplative walk through the city afterward to let the work settle.

Distance Reiki Sessions (Worldwide)

Distance sessions operate on the understanding that subtle fields are not bound by physical proximity. Just as focused intention or sound waves travel across distance, an energetic container can be established and held securely wherever you are in the world.

The Experience:

  • We connect via Google Meet from start to finish. Keeping video on throughout the entire session creates a clear, structured setting.
  • Clients often choose to mute their microphone while keeping my sound on. As I work, I quietly share where I am focusing in your field.
  • Hearing my voice and knowing where the focus is anchors your attention right on the edge between waking and resting. It creates that sweet spot: almost conscious, almost asleep.
  • We conclude with an immediate, grounded conversation to talk through what surfaced and anchor the shift before you log off.

Choose Distance If:

  • You live outside Berlin: You want to work together from anywhere across the globe without travel logistics.
  • You feel safest in your own familiar space: Highly sensitive nervous systems often drop their guard much faster when wrapped in their own bed, surrounded by their own scents, pets, and comforts.
  • You want immediate, uninterrupted rest: With distance work, you don’t have to navigate public transport or traffic afterward. You can transition straight from your session into sleep, journaling, or a quiet evening at home.

Finding Your Fit

Neither format is "better" than the other. I regularly do distance sessions with local Berliners, and work with distance clients when they happen to be in town. Each offering serves different situations and circumstances. It's always best to choose what seems right to you.

Whether we meet face-to-face in the studio or connect across continents, the core outcome remains the same: a steady, grounded space that helps you step away from external demands, soften accumulated tension, and reclaim your internal center.
